Artesanato das Quebradeiras de Coco

Providing resources and market access to women to expand the production and sale of pressed babassu coconut oil

An alarming number of people in the extreme northern region of Tocantins live in poverty. Educational attainment rates are low in the region, which has few work opportunities. The abundant babassu coconut can provide income generation opportunities for women in the region, who are in search of dignified employment.

The Association seeks to improve the working conditions of coconut harvesters, who earn little and dream of increasing their income. By investing in its infrastructure and training, the Association can increase the production and sale of coconut products (virgin coconut oil, flour, soap and handicrafts), increasing family incomes and impacting the local economy.

With support from BrazilFoundation, the Association intends to:

• Purchase equipment and materials for production;
• Train 50 women;
• Spread awareness on the project’s work;
• Participate in fairs and events to support sales.

Impact

“With better working conditions and training, we can ensure that the project continues and increase production and demand.” – Association Team
