The BrazilFoundation will participate in a conference that aims to address the prevalence of domestic abuse among Brazilian women living in New York. Speaking on behalf of the Foundation, Patricia Lobaccaro, CEO of BrazilFoundation, will deliver a paper on the projects funded by the Foundation that confront gender issues and seek to improve women’s rights.  Her talk will also encourage victims to seek support in their community in New York.

Mila Burns of TV Globo and Michelle Viana, an immigration lawyer, will be among the participants. The presenters are looking to inform Brazilian women, community leaders and local media about domestic abuse suffered by Brazilian women living in New York. The event aims to encourage victims to find assistance in their communities; it also seeks to provide information on how women can obtain restraining orders and file for divorce, while informing immigrant women on the necessary steps to obtain a “Green Card” under the Violence Against Women Act.

The event will take place on January 15 at 2:00 PM at the Consulate General of Brazil in New York, located at 1185 Avenue of the Americas, 21st Floor.
