Momento Mulher

Women as Conflict Mediators

EDUCAP has been promoting human rights for more than seven years in the Complexo do Alemão favela in Rio de Janeiro. The project Momento Mulher will prepare women to act as mediators in domestic, intra-family, interpersonal and community conflicts.

Community Mediation can be used as a tool in Rio’s favelas to combat violence and empower residents to encourage the peaceful coexistence of the various factions there. This will not only foster a culture of peace, but stimulate civic engagement and leadership in the community.

IMPACT

With the support of the BrazilFoundation Women’s Fund, EDUCAP will:

• Train and empower 20 women of various ages in conflict mediation in their communities;
• Acquire materials and equipment needed for the training;
• Hire qualified professionals in the field to develop and teach the course;
• Track and monitor the actions of the mediators during and after training.
• Benefit 900 families, including 170 children and adolescentes.
