CPCD is Working to Transform Vila do Sapo
in São Paulo

 
The Centro Popular de Cultura e Desenvolvimento (CPCD) works in Chácara Santo Amaro, an agricultural community of 2,800 with only one school. CPCD is working together with resident children ages 5 to 9 and 25 families from Vila do Sapo, one of the most vulnerable areas of the community, to transform their surroundings.    

Out of the 30 houses, 20 façades were repainted with organic paint, applied with help from the residents residents themselves. CPCD also held permaculture workshops, started a mini, installed 15 gardens in ready-made tires, and transformed a wall to for film projection. The neighborhood is transforming so much that residents now want to change its name to “Vila das Flores” (town of flowers).

“Little by little, and with the help of children, we are creating educational practices that are innovative, diverse, democratic, and fun. And our neighborhood is starting to transform… While we embellish the façades and the walls, the residents share amongst themselves.” says Eliane Luiz de Almeida, Coordinator at CPCD. 

With the goal of working closer with teachers, children and families, the project is also present in the neighborhood’s public school, developing strategies for reading coaching and providing games and organic paint activities. The activities with the educators involve pedagogical games, created together with other educators and children, promoting greater discussions on difficulties faced by students and classroom intervention strategies to improve student performance.
