GRUPO CULTURAL AFRO REGGAE

Promoting the professional and social reinsertion of the formerly-incarcerated

On average approximately 2,500 people leave the Brazilian penal system every month, with no prospect of employment. One of the greatest difficulties is to create opportunities to generate income, both because of social isolation (due to imprisonment) and the stigma of a criminal record. This is where Segunda Chance steps in, preparing and directing participants for the formal job market.

In addition, the project maps and sensitizes public and private companies to hire these people. With this initiative, over 5 thousand participants have found the opportunity of a new beginning, with dignity for themselves and their families. Grupo Cultural AfroReggae has 26 years of experience working in socially-vulnerable and violent areas of Brazil and abroad, where they seek to reduce inequality and combat prejudice through artistic and cultural projects.

With support from BrazilFoundation, Afro Reggae will:

• Support at least 200 people each month;
• Refer 20 formerly-incarcerated individuals and family members for job offers;
• Disclose the project to the incarcerated through state prison administrations;
• Visit companies to sensitize and encourage them to open a selection process for project candidates;
• Increase awareness within society of the importance of the resocialization of the formerly incarcerated.
