The Group’s mission is to support the social development of the northern communities of Maranhão, especially Maroon settlements (quilombos). A BrazilFoundation grantee in 2003, the group has been actively engaged with the local community with positive results and improvements in the quality of life of local residents. The support of BrazilFoundation opened doors for awards and recognitions. In 2010 the Group was designated a “Ponto de Cultura” (Point of Culture)*.

* Title of recognition awarded by the Brazilian Ministry of Culture to institutions that have made socio-cultural impacts in their communities.
