The BrazilFoundation Carioca Fund launched the competition “I, a young carioca, have a story to tell” that will select student writers from public high schools in Rio de Janeiro, located in areas currently undergoing pacification, to write a story that will be illustrated by graphic artists, who were also selected through the competition.
Entries will be accepted from July 8 to August 9, 2013, and 30 student writers will be will be selected to develop their story after careful review of the story pitches. In the second stage, 15 stories will be chosen to be illustrated by 15 young graphic artists.
Three of the best authors and three of the best graphic artists will win a weekend trip to São Paulo to visit the city’s art and literary scene, and they will also have their stories recorded in audio and published in the Jornal O Dia.
This competition is the third of a series, which has been held since 2011 by the Carioca Fund, a BrazilFoundation initiative, in partnership with the Rio de Janeiro Department of Education, UPP Social, Jornal O DIA, JIRJAN, SESI Cultural, Werber Shandwick, and Galera.com. It has the goal of bringing greater visibility to art produced by youth in the pacified communities.
