To promote and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous peoples and to recognize their achievements and their contributions they make to improve the world we all live in, International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed on August 9 each year. The theme for 2011, “Indigenous Designs: Celebrating Stories and Cultures, Crafting Our Own Future,” highlights the need to preserve indigenous cultures.
