Objective

This fund aims to support Fundação Bienal de São Paulo in the promotion of its program. The foundation is the institution behind the second oldest contemporary art biennial in the world, the Bienal de São Paulo, created in 1951. Focusing on contemporary issues, the exhibition and its associated activities are completely free of charge, attracting about 700,000 visitors per edition. One of the highlights of the Bienal de São Paulo is its educational program, which has existed since its second edition, in 1953. In each Bienal, approximately 80,000 people take part in educational activities, including around 18,000 teachers, who by their turn impact around 800,000 students.

Every year after the realization of the Bienal, excerpts of the show travel around Brazil and abroad with the traveling exhibitions program, a fundamental tool for the institution to reach its mission of democratizing access to contemporary art. Since its establishment, in 2011, the program has received around 1,7 million visitors in 29 cities in Brazil and 7 across the globe. The Fundação is also responsible for organizing the Brazilian participation in the Venice Biennales of art and architecture, thus contributing to the internationalization of Brazilian culture.

About Fundação Bienal

Founded in 1962, the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo is a private, nonprofit institution with no party political or religious ties, whose actions aim to democratize access to culture and foster interest in artistic creation. Every two years, the Foundation holds the Bienal de São Paulo, the largest exhibition of the Southern Hemisphere, and its itinerant exhibitions in several cities in Brazil and abroad.

The institution is also the custodian of two items of Latin American artistic and cultural heritage: a historical archive of modern and contemporary art that is a standard reference in Latin America (the Arquivo Histórico Wanda Svevo), and the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion, the head office of the Fundação , designed by Oscar Niemeyer and listed as historical heritage. The Fundação Bienal de São Paulo is also responsible for conceiving and producing Brazil’s representations at the Venice Biennales of art and architecture, a prerogative bestowed upon it decades ago by the Federal Government in recognition of the excellence of its contributions to Brazilian culture.
