Education and Citizenship in Cárcere | Female Edition

IDDD’s mission is to promote individual’s right to legal counsel through democracy. These ideals are central pillars and crucial in the fight against inequality. In addition to free legal counsel, IDDD serves to provoke systematic changes, contributing to positively transforming the Brazilian judicial system.
IDDD holds workshops on the judicial process examining themes of fundamental rights, criminal rehabilitation, racism and masculinity/femininity in jails. This is done to encourage a greater sense of civil responsibility.
This project is focused on encouraging current and former female inmates, based on the profound effect of female incarceration on social and familial relations. Brasil saw a 656% increase in female imprisonment between the years of 2000 and 2016; among the 37,000 incarcerated women, 74% are mothers.
