Viva Rio was founded in 1993 and has programs in the areas of human rights, public safety, community development, education, sports and environment. The organization reaches out to the population of slums and other poor communities in Rio de Janeiro, partnering with local grassroots organizations in order to curb violence. The Legal Advocates project contributed to facilitate the access of legal information among low-income communities, raising the local population’s awareness of their rights and obligations. BrazilFoundation’s support enabled the development of local leaders to spread information about social, civil, economic and cultural rights.
