Thiago Cavalli Azambuja BrazilFoundation Gala New York Honoree Casa do Rio Amazon

Thiago Cavalli Azambuja, Founder, Casa do Rio, Tupana, AM

Thiago Cavalli Azambuja was born in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. He studied arts at PUC – SP. In 2009 he visited the Amazon and fell in love with the Tupana River, where he eventually settled down. With help from friends and local residents, he restored an abandoned house near the Santa Izabel community in Careiro, Amazonas, and Casa do Rio was born. The house began as a residence for artists who wanted to share their experiences with the region. Thiago became concerned with the challenges he saw in the community, especially the high number of youth without access to education. He decided to take action and started a study group to help guide the youth into high school. This experience gave him the courage to found Casa do Rio in 2014. Today, Casa do Rio creates and executes projects to strengthen local governance, conservation and autonomy for people in the Amazon.
