Promoting education and integration through a community garden

Grupo História em Construção collectively manages a cultural space in Vila da Antena, located in Morro das Pedras, in Belo Horizonte. It offers cultural activities for local residents, as well as providing a space for residents interested in offering workshops, presentations or setting up exhibitions. The group also acts in the socio-territorial transformation of the Vila through events and urban interventions.

The activities of the project have as a working objective the principle of social education, which begins with a collective initiative to transform a residential space in Vila Antena into a productive community garden space. The project will be structured with adequate space for the cultivation of seedlings and development of plants, which will allow for increased production to serve the region’s inhabitants. This is the beginning of a movement to create community bonds in a community already segmented by a series of urban space expansion projects. The idea is also to train agents of change with educational efforts.

With support from BrazilFoundation, the Association intends to carry out:

•Training workshops on composting, gardening and social entrepreneurship;
• Mapping of backyard and garden areas;
• Distribution of composting material to Vila Antena families;
•Weekly workshops teaching and practicing planting techniques.
