A gente construindo
In 2001, a young group of local residents occupied a train station, abandoned 20 years earlier, to create a space dedicated to art and culture. That was how the Estação da Cultura (Culture Station) was founded, which then had to fight the Government’s attempt to reclaim the space. BrazilFoundation was the first institution to support the group in 2004 with the “People Building” project.
This project trained young people, offering theater and dance workshops, and also helped with the production of the local newspaper and local radio programs. Since then the organization has earned the respect of government, has expanded its activities and has approved other projects. The space has become a thriving cultural center and was the first Point of Culture * to be recognized by the Ministry of Culture.
