ÂNCORA was first conceived in 1997 by a professor who, after being diagnosed with mental illness, realized the importance of social and family bonds for the treatment and quality of life of the mentally ill. BrazilFoundation is supporting the project Fisherman’s Network, in a small fishing village where 70% of the town’s 1,700 inhabitants lack basic sanitation and 85% live in poverty.

In this environment, alcohol abuse, sexual violence and other social vulnerabilities are endemic. This project will mobilize members of the community and arrange activities to bring families together and combat these social problems, while promoting integration and instilling hope in the younger members of the community.
