Fortalecimento de Acesso à Justiça de Violações de Direitos Humanos de Açailândia
In Maranhão, nearly 20% of the population is illiterate, and it is estimated that 39% of all slave workers in Brazil are concentrated in this state. Confronted with innumerable human rights violations against Açailândia’s most vulnerable populations –compounded by the negligence of public authorities –a group of active community members founded the Carmen Bascaran Center for the Defense of Life and Human Rights.
The Center has combatted human rights violations and worked for social inclusion for 15 years. With BrazilFoundation’s support, the Center will advocate for and provide access to legal mechanisms of justice for victims of slave labor and other violations of human rights in the region.
