Sertão Ecológico Solidário
The dry, northeastern region of Brazil known as the sertão is home to a disproportionate number of families living in poverty. Subsistence farming is the main yet insufficient, economic activity of most. Overtime, the size of the farms and their capacity to produce has greatly been reduced due to the division of inherited property, intensive soil use and poor resource management.
With the support of BrazilFoundation, CEPFS will conduct trainings and workshops that unite new techniques with local knowledge, promoting sustainable resource management while emphasizing the role of women as agents of change. The program will focus on garbage collection and treatment, orchard maintenance, the cultivation of medicinal herbs, and water conservation.
