Cinema Meninos de Araçuaí

Founded in 1998, the Center seeks to promote popular education and community development with an emphasis on culture. Located in the Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, a group of youngsters from the Center managed to build a cinema with the funds raised through the performances of their own choir. The city did not have any cultural facilities, and the cinema became a center for cultural activities. It also offered youth training in video techniques. BrazilFoundation’s support made it possible to operate the cinema.

The youth are responsible for the technical operation and film presentations. Two videos produced by the group won first and second place in the Cultural Contest “Histórias que mudam o Mundo” (Stories that Change the World,) sponsored by the Museum of the Person. They participated in the 20th International Festival of Short Films in São Paulo in 2009, which gave visibility to the project and the films they produced.
