Oficina de Direitos – Uma Campanha de Acesso à Justiça

This group has been in operation in the municipalities of Recife and Afogados da Ingazeira since 1975, assisting women in the rural areas and maroon settlements of the Pajeú region, in Pernambuco – one of the Brazilian states with the highest rate of violence against women. Despite the Maria da Penha law, which guarantees the rights of women in Brazil, its effective implementation depends on the knowledge and ability of those subject to its protection.

With the support of BrazilFoundation, the group contributed to this process by establishing young women as peer educators to provide information about this law.The main benefactors from the project have been Afro-Brazilian women from maroon settlements who are at social risk due to gender, race and socio-economic factors.
