Agroecologia, Valorização e Comercialização dos Produtos da Agricultura Familiar nas Comunidades Pagodão e São Sebastião (Agro-Ecology and the Commercialization of Produce for Family Farmers in Pagodão and São Sebastião)
Over the course of IPÊ’s 20 years championing biodiversity, the Institute has developed a conservation model that integrates biological research, environmental education, habitat restoration, community involvement, income generation and public policy advocacy. The Baixo Rio Negro region exhibits rich biological and social diversity, and already has a local trade network for fruits, manioc flour and fish.
However, trade at this scale doesn’t provide sufficient income to support the population, forcing residents to turn to unsustainable, illegal practices that lead to deforestation. With the support of BrazilFoundation, IPÊ will help local farmers and women’s groups sustainably produce, process and commercialize local fruits, with aims at generating income, promoting food security as well as strengthening local identify.
