Estrelas do Mar
The Instituto Ilhas do Brasil was created in 2005 with the support of ASHOKA to meet the demands of Santa Catarina’s coastal communities, and make a positive social impact on the region. The Institute works in the areas of marine resource conservation, environmental education, income generation, and youth participation.
The project “Estrelas do Mar” engaged the young children of fishermen and taught them about environmental preservation, and its importance in perpetuating the natural resources that are indispensable to their survival. The project also steered youth towards tourism and fishing activities, which had been gradually abandoned in recent years.
