There are barriers to proper dental care for individuals with special needs and financial hardship. These barriers include a lack of training on the part of caretakers, as well as a lack of attention on the part of the patient’s family to the importance of proper oral care.
Through this project, a group of health professionals organized a service specifically designed to improve these general conditions, to make the patients aware of the importance of oral health and to train family members and caretakers in oral hygiene techniques to perform on the patient. Related aspects, such as the possible impairment of speech due to poor oral care and proper nutrition, were also addressed.
