Quixabeira

Sabia’s mission is to rescue citizens’ rights, to strengthen democracy and to reinforce the presence of popular culture in the Brazilian society. The Quixabeira movement was born out of meetings between singers and regional poets who began to save and distribute their cultural manifestations.

Quixabeira plans to value the vast musical heritage kept alive by rural workers in Bahia, Northeast of Brazil, including musical styles such as chulas, bois e roça, sambas Santos Amarenses, aboios, samba martelo and reis. Meetings, rehearsals, workshops and lectures led to the Quixabeira festival, which is the ultimate exchange among these rural artists. BrazilFoundation ´s support made this meeting possible, which has become a cultural reference in the region.
