Terra Viva was founded in 1991 and promotes environmental protection and sustainable development in order to strengthen family agriculture in the region. The objective of the project supported by BrazilFoundation was to train the population and provide strategic technical assistance for the cultivation of vegetables, fruit, and medicinal plants, aiming to improve quality of life and reduce the incidence of the infectious diseases in impoverished rural communities in southern Bahia. As a result, the production and consumption of vegetables increased while the incidence of disease decreased. Five communities are now supported by Terra Viva, and the vegetables and fruits produced have been incorporated into school meals.
