Escola Cultural de Dança Popular
The Popular Union for Life is a community association that assists children who are socially vulnerable as a result of the high incidence of drug abuse in the region. The organization offers services such as after-school tutoring, arts and cultural activities, access to computer labs, and psychosocial care. It also maintains a playroom for the children, and provides food for them. Through this project, BrazilFoundation supported the creation of a dance school for 125 boys and girls.
Through the revival of regional folk dances, the project has promoted a sense of citizenship and cultural identity in children and teenagers. In 2010 the organization received the Prêmio Cultura Viva (Living Culture Award) from the Brazilian Ministry of Culture.
