The Association was established in 2000 in the city of Araçoiaba da Serra, in São Paulo State, with the purpose of serving pregnant young women considered to be at-risk due to vulnerability and extreme poverty. Young women and their children are given shelter and food, as well as medical, psychological and educational assistance to promote mental and social development with a focus on strengthening the ties between mother and child.

The needs of the young mothers after leaving the Association led to the development of new partnerships, such as the one with Acão Moradia (Housing Action), also a BrazilFoundation grantee, with professional training workshops on building affordable housing and other professional skills. Lua Nova’s methodology is a point of reference in Brazil and was recognized as “Best Practice” by the National Secretariat of Human Rights. In 2010, the Association received the Ashoka Changemakers Award in the category of Social Technology for Women.
