Elas Emancipadas

Microcredit and Entrepreneurial Training for Women in Ceará

An alarming number of women in Ceará live on a household income of less than one months’ minimum wage. Moreover, a great number of these women do not have access to professional training courses. 

The Elas Emancipadas project works to integrate women who are at risk of becoming dependent on the Bolsa Família into the workforce. As 8% of women participating in the “Elas Emancipadas” project have no formal education, with 50% of them not having completed primary school, the project will try to reach these women who are of low-income status, and promote economic justice.

The project has already trained 1,300 women through classes in entrepreneurship and through access to microcredit. The Banco Palmas organization itself has inspired the creation of 52 community banks in nine states throughout Brazil, reaching more than 1,000 families.

With support from BrazilFoundation, the project will offer: 

• Cooking and Sewing classes for 60 women;
• 4 meetings to integrate the Emancipadas Assocation.
