Professional training in sewing and printmaking for the formerly-incarcerated population

Brazil has the third largest incarcerated population in the world at almost 800,000 people, of which over half are under the age of 30 and 60% are black. Overcrowded prisons are reaching 197.4% capacity, almost double the number of inmates compared to allocated space, and half of this population is still awaiting trial. After fulfilling their sentence, the majority of the released do not have the support needed to reintegrate into society, one of the contributing causes of high levels of recidivism — one in four convicts, according to Ipea data.

Estamparia Social collaborates to reintegrate the formerly-incarcerated into the labor market and help them change their lives. The organization offers professional training in textiles, with courses in cutting, sewing and printmaking. The project will enable the production and commercialization of products produced by the participants, making it possible to generate income and give scale to their business and production.

With support from BrazilFoundation, Estamparia Social will:

• Provide professional training to 240 formerly-incarcerated people in silk screening, cutting and sewing;
• Rent a space for production and purchase raw materials;
• Design a new collection of products;
• Assist the formerly-incarcerated to reintegrate into the job market and support the creation of their ventures;
• Provide guidance for psychological support;
• Create a network of companies that will hire program participants.
