Environmental education for children and adolescents in the Amazon forest

FAM develops economic, social and environmental solutions in the lower Rio Negro basin, Amazonas. Among its activities are extracurricular environmental education classes for children and adolescents ages 7 to 14 years and artisanal training with repurposed wood to generate income for local youth.

The Foundation is located in Novo Airão, a municipality of 19,000 residents that lacks adequate health and education services as well as employment opportunities. Local youth academic performance is poor, and many have become involved with drugs. With the grant, FAM aims to improve teaching in the environmental education program.

With support from BrazilFoundation, FAM intends to:

• Hold workshops for 150 children and adolescents on organic and family agriculture, water and solid waste management, medicinal plants, cultural diversity, history, and geography;
• Hire 2 educators for program activities;
• Purchase material to support activities.
