Instituto da Mulher Negra Mãe Hilda Jitolu

As it is a terreiro community, the Mother Hilda Jitolu Institute combines the work of promoting entrepreneurship among Black women in the Curuzu and Liberdade neighborhoods in Salvador with the sacred matriarchal African traditions in one of the main Candomblé lineages in Bahia. Developed in conjunction with the centenary of the matriarch of Ilê Aiyê, with donations from the Black Entrepreneurship Fund of BrazilFoundation, the “Art in Hands” project aims to support 50 Black women in the field of sewing and fabric customization, including the structuring of businesses led by them. Founded in 2020 in response to the community reorganization resulting from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Mother Hilda Jitolu Institute is part of the Black Women’s Network of the Northeast.
