Expand the association’s scope to create income generating opportunities for local family farmers

Comunidade Santo Antônio is located on highway BR 319, near Manaus. It was founded by traditional farmers and migrants from the capital, who settled in the region and lived off cassava farming and predatory fishing. Currently, most of the 34 families living in the community grow vegetables and raise small animals for subsistence. Their income is derived from governmental welfare programs and selling their surplus.

The association began as an informal group in 1993 with the purpose of meeting local demands and it formalized in 2017. In 2018 they looked to boost organic and agroecological production. With the grant, they will collaboratively work to identify short, medium and long-term needs to improve production, to increase fundraising and to offer sustainable production alternatives, as well as, expand the association’s capacity through training.

With support from BrazilFoundation, the Association aims to:

• Perform a diagnostic evaluation allowing for a systemic view of the association and community;
• Create a strategic plan based on local potential;
• Train 60 people in management and production using agroecological systems;
• Acquire land to expand the association’s headquarters.
