The Bororo people have depended on the assistance of government programs and religious groups for many years, which though distributing funds, have made decisions irrespective of the indigenous population’s opinions and priorities. The Pemo Association was formed by the Bororo people as a platform from which to advocate for cultural and economic autonomy. In recent years, the fish upon which their traditional livelihood depends have been disappearing due to overfishing, pollution and industrial projects.
The dwindling fish population is threatening the tribe’s millennia old Fish Ceremony as well. With the support of BrazilFoundation, Pemo will construct a large fish-farming tank for food and for sale. With the profits, the Bororo plan to rebuild the sacred house where the Fish Ceremony is performed.
