Mobilizing and preparing youth and adults from peripheral communities for higher education

UNEAFRO is a network of black Brazilian adults and youth from peripheral communities across Brazil to support community prep courses for the Enem (national high school exam), college entrance exams and political education courses. By providing access to education and the workforce, UNEAFRO aims to provide youth a life without violence and prejudice.

UNEAFRO is run by volunteers, community leaders, professors and students who prepare youth for higher education. Through community education, UNEAFRO encourages people to reflect upon and fight for policies that promote safety, education, health, work, culture, urban mobility and themes that can change their realities. With the grant, UNEAFRO aims to strengthen and better organize its work and build a space in Cidade Kemel, a neighborhood of 16,000 in Itaquaquecetuba, to reach black youth, the main victims of violence from organized crime.

With support from BrazilFoundation, UNEAFRO will:

• Renovate their space to hold classes;
• Contract an educational coordinator;
• Prepare 40 students for the ENEM (Brazil’s national high school exam);
• Reach 30% more people.

Impact
