Literacy, professional training and entrepreneurship for formerly-incarcerated youths and adults in Sergipe

According to The Brazilian Forum on Public Safety and The Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), Sergipe is at the top of national rankings for homicides and death among youth aged 15 to 29. The state’s unemployment rate is also high, reaching 17.1% in 2018, the highest in history.

ONG Ágatha offers free classes for youth and adults in Aracaju. One focus of their work is the social reintegration of the formerly-incarcerated, especially women who have been victims of domestic violence or suffer from drug addiction and financial hardship.

The project will offer literacy and vocational courses in the Aeroporto and adjacent neighborhoods, areas where populations facing social and economic hardships, along with the formerly-incarcerated and their families, reside. The goal is to prepare students for the workforce and help reduce the rate of recidivism, which is 40% locally.

With support from BrazilFoundation, ONG Ágatha aims to:

• Offer courses in computers, graphic and web design, sales, business management and entrepreneurship;
• Train vulnerable youth in entrepreneurship;
• Partner with criminal courts in Aracaju for course referrals from the prison system;
• Partner with city and state schools in the neighborhoods.
